17 Express members went out to Mattoonman-17 members finished Mattoonman. We finished tied for second overall in the USAT Mideast Region Team Championship, placing 8 of out 17 team members on the podium as well as the 1st overall female and 2nd overall male
Congratulations to Holly, Eddy, Laurie, Rod R, Bill B, Mary Ann and Jess for age group and overall finish awards. Also, special props to Gary F, Tim Morehead, Jim Slusser, Dave B and Mark B who weren't really well trained for the distance but took one for the team.
Overall, I say well run race and a good time. The scenery on the run was spectacular...some of the tallest August corn I've seen, oh, and the soy beans. The swim was a long 1500meters with no wetsuits allowed-a first(on both fronts)for most that do local Cincinnati races.
Swim: Not very good 31:17 which is very slow for me. I felt OK and thought I was moving pretty good on the first leg and turn. On the second leg back towards shore I started to veer off course quite a bit.
T1: Uneventful, stripped off the Blue Seventy swimskin got the shoes and helmet on and headed out.
Bike: Pretty good bike @ 1:06:33 for a 22.4 MPH average. I tried to stay relaxed on the bike and not push too hard as I was still recovering from the hip injury but I felt good. I hit a rough patch of road and lost my liquid nutrition then I got stuck behind a car that would not pass and it brought me to a halt and cost me at least a minute. All in all pretty uneventful Great to see the fellow Yellow Menace flying around on the bike course!!
T2: I felt like a total novice as I could not find my bike rack position. I lost at least another 30 seconds as my normal T2 is around 40 second and this took me 1:17. Once I found it, someone knock my stuff all over the place, It got my shoes and took off.
Run: Satisfied with the run @ 49:23 with a 7:58 per mile avg. My goal was to finish the run under 50 minutes. My hip was throbbing and I had reduced my run training in hopes of healing up, but having had a good training run on Thursday, I kept telling myself it was no different than that run and just stay focused. I ran a negative split and felt strong at the finish.
I ended up 2 out of 24 in my division. The swim was close (and I had a bad swim), I got killed on the bike as the winner rode at a 24.2 pace and I beat him on the run but not enough to close the gap.

The Caesar Creek triathlon was a great day for Team Cincy Express Multisport. Unfortunately, I was not able to race as I was recovering from a hip pointer that I sustained in a crash at the Morgantown MedExpress and I did not want to further impact my IMLOU training. We received much appreciated support from our sponsors; Bonk Breaker, Fluid, Nuun, Rudy Project and Wheelie Fun. We also achieved the number 2 racers overall in both the Olympic and Sprint tris as well as number 2 overall woman in the Olympic Du.
Our final tally at the Caesar Creek races was 34 racers and 24 podium placers. Our team roster now officially sits at 90. We had a great cookout afterwards, with my injured self acting as head chef and had over 80 people attend including friends and families.
We are currently second (behind the defending Champions, Toledo Tri Club) in the USAT Mideast Region Team Championship standings going into the Mattoon Man Championship race on August 3rd. In the end it will come down to who brings the most competitors to the race as well as individual placing as participation points are just as important as placing points. This may hurt us as it is a 4 1/2 hour drive to the race and Toledo beat us to USAT to ask for a grant to pay for bussing to the event and they received it. (we will know better for next year). However, we have not given up and are trying to work around other commitments to get 15-20 team members there to compete.
Also, I should be recovered in about a 7-10 days, I just did not want to push it as my IM is only two months away and I was sore all through training last week after the wreck.

I recommend this race as the people and city of Morgantown were very friendly and accommodating. The area and local attractions are family friendly and the course can be challenging in spots.
I went into the race at 213lbs, a little heavier than the 210lbs that I intended. I have lost 22lbs so far basically from staying out of the weight room and reducing my food intake. However, I seem to have plateaued. I need something to jump start my metabolism so I my hit the weights lightly to see what that does as I want to drop 13 more lbs and go into IMLOU at 200lbs.
So here is my race report.
Swim - PR 33:21. It was a river swim and the current near the locks was tough and some said the swim was long but I had a great swim, about 2 minutes faster than my previous best 1/2 iron swim.
Bike - 1st loop was pretty solid, hills were tougher than they seemed on the pre-race drive but I averaged 21 mph. 2nd loop was when the trouble started. The rain was pouring down then stopped then started, I was getting ready to make the turn around at the 1st out and back section at about the 33 mile mark when the guy in front of me wrecked. I was a good 5 lengths behind him and only going about 10 mph but when I hit the brakes I skidded on the gravel and wet coal dust roads and laid my bike down. I hit hard on my left hip and skidded about 10 feet. I got up and checked myself and bike out. I dropped my chain and my rear wheel was loose so I fixed them and I had some cuts on my left elbow and forearm but my hip was throbbing. I got some pretty good road rash and a 5 inch gash on my left hip bone (another good scar). I wasted about 5 minutes at the crash site and watched several people fly by, anyway the rest of my bike was pathetic and my average dropped to 19.4 mph so I was a little disappointed.
Run - the run brought on more disappointment. I zipped in and out of T2 and felt pretty good for the first three miles as I was passing several people and caught the only guy in my division that passed me when I wrecked on the bike. However, at around 4 miles I started to tighten up in the hip and it was throbbing. I tried to shorten my stride and lengthen my stride but it didn't help and I felt myself slowing down. At the 5 mile mark I hit the big hill; with devil cheering me on I walked/ trotted up it. I finished the first loop around 57 minutes. However, the second loop was down right sad as my run really slowed. I gutted it out and crossed the line at 5:39:05. My run was a dismal 9:51 avg mile when I planned to run 8:20s and I was shooting for 5:15 overall so I was a little disappointed.
I finished 1/9 in XL2 and 1/16 in all Clydesdales
A good day until the second bike loop, after that the weather and my performance was sub-par and erratic. However, I hung out with some current friends and made some new ones so all in all it was worth the trip

Overall, I was pretty satisfied, considering I had a 23 hour workout week thanks to my coach and friend Eddy W and the 5 1/2 hour bike on Friday - nice!
I finished at 2:32:50, 1st in the Clydesdales 40+ and 2nd Overall Clydesdale, which put me 3rd in 40-44 age group and 46th overall. As a 214 pounder, I'll take that but I still need to lose 14 lbs before IMLOU and get under 200lbs.
My swim was OK, as I exited the water at 25:51, thinking I crossed the timing mat on the beach but not realizing it did not stop until transition entrance which cost me time as I got an official swim of 27:15, T1 was OK.
I hammered the first loop of the bike averaging over 23 mph until Dave A a teammate caught me around the base of the final hill and passed me (thanks for making me feel bad about myself Dave). My legs started to feel tired due to the work of the week on the second loop and I gave back a 1.5 mph avg and finished with an average speed of 21.6 mph. I flew in and out of T2 in 46 seconds.
I felt OK on the run for the first 2-3 miles as I tried to get my legs back and adjust to the heat (over 95 degrees and humid) but was going about 1 minute slower per mile than the pace I wanted as I was running about 9:30s. I stated to pick up the pace at about the 3 mile mark and stared running just under an 8 minute pace. I returned the passing favor to Dave A around the 4.5 mile mark when I caught him and I cruised the remaining 1.5 miles; finishing with an average overall pace of 8:44 per mile. This is over a minute slower per mile than my normal Olympic pace but with all the long course training this year I have not really done any speed work and it showed. However, relative to the field my run was 58th overall.
Considering the heat, it was a good training day and I ran my 2 hours later in the day at 5:30 PM. I did just over 12.3 miles in 2 hours on the Miami Trail so you can see that my pace was blistering.
I do feel a little tired today but I already did my 1.5 hour easy spin this morning and I will get my swim in.

Cincy Express Multisport is dedicated to helping individuals of all ages and abilities in their enjoyment and performance of multi-sport activities. Cincy Express is committed to building camaraderie between individuals through education, group training, exchanging techniques, and participation in community events and social functions, as well as promoting health, wellness, and safety in the spirit of endurance sports. I formed Cincy Express in May of 2004 when I posted an invitation to start a multisport club in Cincinnati on a local bulletin board to which there was immediate response. With the help of just a few energetic volunteers, Team Cincy Express Multisport was founded in January 2005. Since that time we have grown rapidly to over 60 active members who participate in the sport of triathlon and mulit-sport from entry level social athletes to numerous multiple Ironman finishers. We have several Ironman age grouper winners, numerous USAT All-Americans, five IM World Championship qualifiers, national caliber olympic distance athletes, numerous Boston Marathon qualifiers and those who just want to get out and compete on the weekend. We have active and retired Army Rangers, Green Berets, Navy Divers and Marines among our ranks and several officers and agents from local police departments, federal ATF and the FBI. We have homemakers, salespeople, administrators, executives, business owners, entrepreneurs and nearly every other type of professional. To a person, we share a bond in our desire to succeed in our chosen sports of triathlon and duathlon. We are people from around this region who are devoted to serious training for the purpose of improving ourselves, our team, our sport and the promoting healthy living and a lifestyle that is the foundation of success in our team racing pursuits.
